Are the People in your Life Assets or Hidden Liabilities?

Are the people you spend time with helping you grow, or are they quietly holding you back?

Most of us don’t often stop to think about who we spend time with, but our surroundings shape our mood, energy, and how fast we grow. It’s easy to just go along with whoever is nearby, but every relationship either helps you grow or slowly wears you down.

Think about the calls and texts you get. When you see a certain name pop up, how do you feel right away? Do you tense up, expecting complaints or drama? Or do you feel lighter, knowing you’ll have a good conversation that inspires you?

There’s a big difference between supporting a friend who is truly struggling and being the person someone always turns to when they don’t want to face their own problems.

  • Liabilities are relationships filled with constant complaining, gossip, and never-ending problems. You end up always trying to help, but get nothing in return. After talking with these people, you feel drained and disconnected from yourself. They keep you stuck because they need you to stay the same so they can feel comfortable.

  • Assets are the relationships that inspire you and are built on respect. These people don’t expect you to be perfect, just real. They help you grow by sharing their own progress, celebrating your successes, and leaving you feeling stronger and more creative after you talk.

Changing and growing as a person means protecting your energy. You can’t move forward if you retain the same habits and mindsets around you that you want to leave behind. Taking care of your peace isn’t being cold—it’s taking care of yourself.

It’s okay to look at your relationships and decide which ones still fit who you are becoming. It doesn’t always mean you need to cut these people out of your life entirely, but you may want to take inventory to see how much of yourself you are willing to energize.

Who in your life lifts you up, and who leaves you feeling drained? Share your thoughts in the comments.
