How to Reclaim the Breath Your Childhood Stole
When I was a little girl, I spent two weeks in the ICU fighting for something most people take for granted: a single breath.
I still remember the sterile smell of the hospital room, the steady hum of the monitors, and how scary it felt to be unable to breathe. The doctors called it a severe asthma attack. Now that I’ve learned what I know now, I see it differently. My body was expressing what my subconscious mind commanded.
We often believe our physical symptoms are just random problems. But in reality, our bodies and emotions reflect each other. We don’t see the world exactly as it is. We see the world through our perceptions and beliefs. Our emotions and feelings color everything. These feelings shape how we see things, and that affects how our nervous system reacts and deeper…the lies we tell ourselves.
When a child feels fear or emotional tightness, the subconscious mind tries to protect them, and in that moment they may say to themselves they are “helpless” or “not safe”. For me, that emotional tension showed up as trouble breathing. My body was acting out the belief that it wasn’t safe to fully experience life or take up space. My body was also carrying a lot of grief, whether from a past life or ancestrally.
For years, we’ve tried to manage just the physical symptoms. We focus on fixing what’s on the surface. But unless we deal with the real cause, our bodies will keep warning us. Real healing didn’t come from only treating my body. It started when I looked more deeply into what was really going on inside my subconscious.
I had to go back and remember that little girl in the ICU bed. I had to realize that her young nervous system had adopted a silent rule of survival: that it was dangerous to speak her truth, voice her needs, or fully express her emotional depth. This is why changing your subconscious mind is so powerful. It helps heal who you are at your core.
When you look beneath the surface and change those deep, protective habits, you teach your nervous system that it’s safe to relax and declare something new. You move from just surviving and feeling limited to feeling open and able to grow. When your subconscious changes, your physical reality changes too.
If you’re dealing with ongoing tension, anxiety, or feeling stuck, I encourage you to stop fighting the symptoms and look at what they might be showing you. What message is your body sending you? What old belief is your subconscious still trying to protect you from?
You don’t have to live feeling restricted. You deserve to breathe deeply, grow, and take back your sense of self. Comment “BREATH” below if this resonates.
